NEWS
UPDATE

The Blue Light Weekend committee were disappointed to hear Peter Levy's comments on BBC Look North this week - saying that our 2024 event was currently being scaled back or was in some way in doubt.

We are pleased to say this is not the case.

We would only consider scaling back some events if we had a funding shortfall by August, but we are working hard to avoid this and we thank all business and individuals who have been in touch with offers of support over the last week. Anyone else wishing to help in any way - big or small - please contact Kristina !

Withernsea set for Spitfire Spectacular

The Blue Light Weekend organisers are proud to announce that the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight have kindly agreed to once again grace the skies above Withernsea.

However this year it's not just a stunning flypast - but instead we have manage to secure a thrilling tailchase display from two of our most historic aircraft, sparring high above our promenade.

At precisely 15:00 hours on Sunday 11th August we request everyone please assemble and Look Up.

Lest we forget.

Champion Olympic!

Blue Light Weekend were delighted to be invited to a fantastic fundraising Race Night evening held at Olympic Club in aid of Ash Healand.

Thanks to Helen Cleworth of Precious Prints for nominating Blue Light Weekend as a beneficiary, and the Olympic Club themselves for organising the evening.

As well as the financial amount raised for him the Blue Light Weekend organisers are trying to arrange a special day out for Ash and his family.

Pictured with Ash and his family are Kerri Dawson and Ben Robinson from Blue Light Weekend, plus Helen Cleworth and the organisers from the Olympic Club.

DIRECT FROM THE WORLD FAMOUS CAVERN CLUB, LIVERPOOL

Beatles Complete present a night of Beatlemania packed with massive hits from the most influential band of all time.

This Liverpool based ‘beat combo’ were the youngest ever Beatles band to gain a residency at the Cavern Club in Liverpool where they still perform every Thursday and Saturday, packing the club out and creating a unique Beatles vibe. All four members are accomplished multi-instrumentalists allowing them to span right across The Beatles’ recording history, from “Please Please Me” right through to “Let It Be”.

Having performed at International Beatle Week for the last 3 years running, the lads have been invited to return again for 2024 and are also taking their show to theatres across the UK for the first time. We are honoured that they have taken a night off from the Cavern Club to come to Withernsea to play at the Blue Light Weekend key fundraiser.

Fri 26th July

This is a night not to be missed for all Beatles fans performed by a band who are quickly making a name for themselves due to their musical prowess, boundless energy and easy Liverpool wit. The Beatles were a phenomena in musical history, Beatles Complete remind you why.

Raiders glad they dropped by!

The Blue Light Weekend organisers were delighted to hear from the Royal Navy Raiders Parachute Display Team, who thrilled the Withernsea crowd last year.

They are really looking forward to returning to Holderness and were especially thankful for the £1,000 donation the Blue Light Weekend made towards their vital safety equipment.

Over the summer The Holderness Gazette will be interviewing the team to learn what made Withernsea so special to them.

Come and see their two amazing jumps above Withernsea on Sunday 11th August ! Maybe they will pick you as a lucky competition winner of a helicopter ride !

Coming Soon ! Exclusive GoPro video footage from the parachutists as they jumped from 6,000 feet above Withernsea!

Blue Light Weekend News

Are You Ready for Blue Light Weekend 2024? Mark Your Calendars!

The organising committee are proud to announce that the event programme for Blue Light Weekend 2024 is now almost finalised - and it's fair to say that you're going to be as excited to hear about it as we are to tell you !

Save the dates: 10-11 August 2024

Whilst the finer details of our programme will be released over the coming months, we're excited to share that locals and visitors will be treated to an official Tier 2 air show over Withernsea - double the size of last year's incredible spectacle ! We've had to engage one of the UK's top Flight Display Directors to safely manage Withernsea's airspace.

If that wasn't enough we already have a LOT more events on land and sea already committed - including a return of the massively popular Colour Run (entries are now open!). We expect over double the blue light events and promenade stalls that Withernsea hosted last August. We've had applications from some national traders, and we have some unusual and high-quality vendors who are sure will wow the Withernsea public. We're going to need a bigger promenade !

We also potentially have some high profile surprise national visitor attractions, which we will reveal once finer details are agreed (our people are speaking with their people, etc).

Keep checking back on this website and in the Holderness Gazette as we reveal detail of this year's huge free weekend programme. We promise you won't be disappointed !

Sponsors required

But of course as Blue Light Weekend 2024 is over twice the size of last year's event you won't be surprised to learn it also costs a LOT more to stage. However the organising committee are all local people who understand finances are tight - especially in SE Holderness - so once again 99% of the weekend will be completely free as we encourage families to attend.

That said, we are currently appealing for companies and local business to back us with sponsorship of various levels, which start from as little as £50. Contact Kristina to discuss what opportunities we have available - and hear about some of the benefits we can provide in return (including some eyebrow-raising money-can't-buy rewards for our larger backers).

That said, every penny counts and if you are able we'd gratefully welcome a donation of any size to our crowdfunding site. Some of the most fantastic warm gestures we've seen have come from public donations. The Blue Light Weekend team once again thank all the sponsors from last year's event who believed we could deliver, with absolutely no evidence whatsoever, and generously backed our vision and energy to make it all happen.

Colour Run

Entries for our massively popular 2km Colour Run/Jog/Walk are on sale now! We have to limit entry numbers for safety reason so we'd advise you sign-up quickly !

We also have a small number of affordable Colour Run Stations available for sale - contact us for more details.

And in August 2024 we also have water!

And a reminder that the paint used in our Colour Run is specially produced for this purpose, and safe to use. Don't believe everything you read on Facebook! ;)

Raft Race

This year we are limiting to 10 rafts in our ever-popular raft Race - contact us if you'd like your pub, club or organisation to sponsor or enter a team.

We even provide your raft !

Sea Swims

Entries are now open for our popular half mile and one-mile Blue Light Weekend sea swims, all professionally managed with support from a number of safety boats.

Test yourself in a fun and safe way - enter here.

Tiger Moth flight competition

Undoubtedly our own Para Dave was the star of Blue Light Weekend 2023, and once again the owners of his Tiger Moth aircraft have generously donated a free flight above our area in this historic plane.

Tickets are only £2.50 and are on sale now.

Win a flight in a helicopter!

Last year's hugely popular competition - when the Royal Navy Raiders parachute guys landed on your 900 beermats scattered on the beach selecting 3 lucky helicopter flight winners - returns in 2024. Beermat entries are available from Precious Prints, Queen Street, Withernsea. Only £1 a go!

Again we express massive thanks to Martyn and Phoenix Building Services for the use of his helicopter during the Blue Light Weekend.

Blue Light Bands

Last year's music event in the Meridian Centre was loud, sweaty and amazing wasn't it?

Well we're going to smash that with our 2024 event at the Willows Club.

A special one-night reformation of a massive local band from the 1990's to be announced soon!

And watch out for our special music stage on Withernsea Promenade on Saturday 10th August with top local artists entertaining you!

Volunteering

We're proud to say that some of the Hull City of Culture volunteers who gave their time at Blue Light Weekend 2023 described it as their "best volunteering event of the year".

We are undoubtedly expecting more visitors to Withernsea in 2024 than we saw last year, so we will need more friendly and smiling volunteers to help with coordination and signposting.

If you can spare a few hours before or during the event weekend - we'd love to hear from you.

Event Programme

Most of the weekend events and attractions are confirmed, but there are still some we can't reveal until contracts have been signed.

That said, we are following last year's hugely successful model meaning that Saturday 10th August is dedicated to land and sea events and activities, and Sunday 11th August you will get a sore neck Looking Up at our air show - over 10 aerial displays over 4 hours.

We promise that Withernsea has never seen anything like this.

BLUE LIGHT WEEKEND CHARITIES

We are planning this year's BLW will be bigger and better than last year's spectacular event. Charities financially benefitting last year included Yorkshire Air Ambulance, RNLI Withernsea, Hornsea Inshore Lifeboat and Royal Navy Raiders, and we want to do a lot more in 2024. Watch this space for more details over the coming months.

Steve

In memory of Steve

Withernsea's Blue Light Weekend was the idea of Steve Medcalf.

It was Steve's vision for Withernsea to host an annual high-profile, free, fun family event and really put the town on the map.

The wonderful Withernsea community were determined to make that happen.
